WhaleShark Media to Change its Name

By

WhaleShark Media, the most widely known online coupon site in the United States, has announced that it has changed its name to RetailMeNot.com. The Austin, Texas based company is supported by Brian Sharples, the founder and CEO of HomeAway.com together with Northwest Venture Partners, Adams Street Partners and Austin Ventures. WhaleShark Media purchased RetailMeNot.com for about $89 Million.

Aside from the name change, another new thing for RetailMeNot is their acquisition of Holland's leading coupon site known as Actiepagina.nl. Despite their being tight-lipped about the amount of the deal, according to those familiar with the matter commented that Actiepagina may cost below $10million. Three other sites in Europe of RetailMeNot are Deals.com in Germany, VoucherCodes in United Kingdom and Poulpeo in France.

RetailMeNot does business with bigger companies in creating online coupons. They give lower markdown on a regular basis, which is the same way with traditional clipped coupon. This is a lot different from companies like Groupon who works with small companies that provide a one-off markdown.
