A slice of next-generation technology is soon to make its way to your trusty smart phone, as Korean electronics manufacturer LG is reportedly gearing towards implementing next-generation security systems in its flagship phone releases for next year, in spite of the fact that its current flagship phone, the LG G4, is yet to make its full splash into stores and resellers.
According to reports, the LG G5, which is slated for release sometime next year as the Korean company's new flagship release, is the most likely candidate to use iris recognition as part of its security system. The technology is the product of the team-up between LG and IRIENCE, another Korea-based firm that specializes in the development of biometric security systems. Some reports also suggest that the team-up is already at a late stage, as IRIENCE has reportedly completed the development of the hardware component to be included in the G5 just in time for the mass production of the mobile phone for next year. Meanwhile, engineers are said to be trying to increase the effective scanning range of the recognition technology from 30 cm to 50 cm, allowing users to unlock their phones with a glance, into something that could be realized in as little as two to three months.
Iris-recognition technology is widely touted to be a more secure, unique and foolproof alternative to fingerprint recognition-based security technology already being sported by several current-generation smart phones.
Industry watchers consider the move by LG, which is already known to set itself apart from the pack through unique design and functionality as a way to compete, to leave out biometrics-based security from its products in favor of a more secure and more cutting-edge option as a major selling point against the competition, which up to now has only included fingerprint recognition in their products.
