"Penny Dreadful season 2" continues to wow critics and fans alike with its classic horror story. The British-American series will return on Sunday, June 7 with another episode titled, "Glorious Horrors," focuses on Sir Malcolm Murray and Vanessa Ives.
Timothy Dalton's Sir Malcolm will get tragic news in the next episode while Eva Green's Vanessa celebrates a glorious night that will become horrific, as per the official synopsis released by Showtime.
"Glorious Horrors" will follow last Sunday's episode titled, "Above the Vaulted Sky," where Vanessa, Sir Malcolm, and Ethan, played by Josh Hartnett, protects the mansion from an attack.
The witches takes center stage in the last episode of "Penny Dreadful" with Hecate's return to their lair with a clump of Vanessa's hair into her doll as her mother, Evelyn, played by Helen McCory, tortures the wife of Malcolm by planting a needle into her doll's brain.
Showtime's series joins the acclaimed list of shows under the horror genre. Indiewire noted that what makes "Penny Dreadful" exciting is how it presents its female characters as antiheroes as opposed to being the victims in the story. Slowly, the show is shuttering the conventional categories of women in every tale where they will either be the old hag or the beautiful siren.
In fact, Billie Piper, Lily Frankenstein in the series, is being lauded for her unconventional portrayal of her character. As the site Bloody Disgusting reports, Piper became a major player of the show's second season because of her pure sense of heart and soul, which no other characters can match.
The site even claims that the cult show belongs to the "Doctor Who" alum, opposing Entertainment Weekly's previous statement that the show belongs to Eva Green. Is there a competition between the two gems of the show?
Whether or not there is a healthy competition between Billie Piper and Eve Green, "Penny Dreadful" remains a fresh horror series that represents its female characters in an unconventional manner. Its next episode titled, "Glorious Horrors" places Sir Malcolm and Vannesa at the center once again.
