Custom made prototype builder Proto Labs Inc is preparing to make its first acquisition in fourteen years. The specialty manufacturer would be adding new manufacturing knowledge and processes and not 3D printing technology as earlier rumored.
According to Proto Labs Inc CEO Bradley Cleveland, 3D printing was 'slow and unsuitable for commercial needs'. Despite its increasing popularity within the industry and its shareholders, there was a clear distinction between 3D printing and prototype building. He added, "We don't want to get into the world of selling printers."
It cannot be denied though that the association with known 3D printing firms has helped the increase the share values of Proto Labs Inc, which increased by 90% since its IPO back in February 2012.
For its part, Proto Labs builds custom prototypes out of plastic and metal using its own software. The programming automates tasks such as design analysis and manufacturing process simulations.
