The "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" has always been famous for its campy, yet fun show geared towards kids. The show, which first aired in the 1990s still has a huge following to date. Now, Lionsgate plans a bold new take on the beloved show.
The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is currently on its 22nd season. The current season, titled Power Rangers Dino Charge, can be viewed on Nickelodeon, and is still as campy as ever. Those who have followed the series since the early 90's can now anticipate an upcoming movie reboot of the nostalgic childen's show.
Director Dean Israelite, of Project Almanac fame will be taking on the project. According to IGN, the director was excited to be working on the project and will be giving the film a "different tone." Dean teased that the upcoming film will be less campy, and more mature. While this might not play well for those who are playing on the show's nostalgia, the director assured that the film's tone will still be "playful."
"I read the script and was really surprised by it and thought there was a really cool, contemporary, mature but still playful, buoyant and fun take on the material, and was updated in a really interesting way. It had this wonderful character that's essential to going on a fantastic adventure. I was instantly drawn to it. I remember it as a kid. I grew up with it in South Africa. When I opened the script I had no idea how it was going to be updated, and I was really impressed by it." Dean said.
While fans of the show still have their doubts on a grittier Power Rangers reboot, they can already count on a familiar face who will most likely be making a comeback to the movie. Jason David Frank, who played Tommy Oliver (aka The Green Ranger) in over 200 episodes on TV, hinted that he just might be making a cameo in the upcoming movie.
"I just don't know the extent of my role in it," Frank said in an interview with Movie Pilot. "But I'm pretty sure I'll be in it."
The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers reboot will be released in theaters on January 13, 2017.
