Ericsson to Purchase Microsoft's IPTV unit

Microsoft Corp's IPTV business unit is subject of discussions with Ericsson, the telecommunications giant. IPTV allows software used by telecommunications companies to deliver television shows over the Internet.

This was first reported by Bloomberg and has said that the transaction would be announced in the next few weeks. It quoted sources knowledgeable with the transaction but requested anonymity.

IPTV or Internet Protocol Television utilizes technology that powers the Internet to transfer data content over telecommunications and cable networks. Microsoft, through their website, says that its Mediaroom IPTV platform is offered by over forty of the leading operators in the world. It claims to have a maket base of eleven million households.

Ericsson is currently the world's biggest manufacturer of wireless networks and is catering to telecommunciations companies competing in the cable, satellite and web based markets. Microsoft for its part intends to focus its television services through its Xbox gaming console.

Both Microsoft and Ericsson refused to make any comment on the report from Bloomberg.
