Telmex to Face Class Action Suit Instituted by Government Regulator

A class action suit has been filed against Telmex, Carlos Slim's fixed line telephone company. The suit was filed by the consumer protection agency of Mexico on allegations that the firm had made illegal charges to its consumers.

The Profeco said Telmex had charged fees for unwarranted services and the suit was file din federal civl court in Mexico. The government agency said that Telmex charged users 10.40 pesos a month for data protection services that was considered a constitutional right.

It is still unclear as to how many individual customers would be joining the suit and the total liability of Telmex. According to Rafael Ochoa of the federal prosecutor's offce, "There's still not a precise estimate." The coverage of the inquiry had commenced March 2012.

Last Februrary, Mexico's competition agency Cofeco has imposed a fine worth US$52 million or GBP 34 million pounds against Telmex for what it deemed as 'monopolistic practices.'
