Bostjan Jazbec, the International Monetary Fund expert has been appointed as the central bank governor of Slovenia. He faces an uphill climb, inheriting a financial system clogged with bad debt and a future to become the sixth Euro zone member to seek international financial help.
Jazbec was confirmed by Slovenia's parliament to take the top position in Banka Slovenije after Marko Kranjec's mandate ends by mid-July. He will also be sitting in the Governing Council of the European Central Bank.
In an interview, Jazbec said, "The problems aren't insurmountable. We know we have to rebuild the banking system. With a common effort from all policymakers we can carry this through to ensure that assistance from outside the country won't be needed."
The current European debt crisis has hindered the full growth of the country. The country has tried to avert conditionalities that led to the crisis in Cyprus, who had to comply with harsh conditions to obtain financing to resuscitate its economy.
