Mitsui Purchases Heraeus

In an announcement, Mitsui Chemicals Inc. of Japan said that it would be purchasing Heraeus Dental of Germany. The price tag for the dental products manufacturer is Eur450 million.

With the purchase, Heraeus Dental would now have a foundation to expand into the global dental product business. The Japanese based manufacturer of petrochemicals, polymers and engineering materials would serve as the conduit to expand the consumer base of Heraeus while Mitsui adds another chemical manufacturer into its portfolio.

Heraeus Dental on the other hand is a manufacturer of dental solutions and materials, such as metal alloys for prosthetics, teeth and other materials for casting and compounds used in the dental-surgical medical business.

After a portfolio evaluation, Mitsui is now planning to expand its activities in other business areas. According to Jan Rinnert, Heraeus Board of Management, "We see very good opportunities for long term development for Heraeus Dental in this new constellation. This was a crucial factor for us in the decision to sell."
