German Deutsche Telekom plans to amend the terms of a proposed merger between its T-Mobile USA and MetroPCS Communication, a local company, sources said.
While no final decision has been made on the new terms, Deutsche Telekom is considering the amendment ahead of a scheduled shareholding voting next week.
The proposed merger was aimed to reduce the gap with US competitors and secure fundings for other domestic investments. Deutsche Telekom had previously attempted to sell T-Mobile to AT&T but this did not push through due to regulators.
Failure of the merger plans could have serious implications, sources said.
The proposed merger was agreed upon in October but some MetroPCS shareholders who owns about 12 percent stocks contested the terms. The group is now campaigning for the voting down of the deal on April 12.
