PlayStation 4 users waiting for the arrival of Star Wars: Battlefront will be interested to know that the next-gen console platform is serving as the lead platform for the game's development, and that development and gameplay builds of the game are all running on PlayStation 4 units.
Electronic Arts (EA) and developer DICE Games confirmed the behind-the-scenes information during the recent Electronic Entertainment Expo 2015 (E3), when they showcased gameplay footage in a pre-alpha build of Battlefront on PS4 hardware. A representative for EA told PS4daily.com that "PS4 is the lead platform for now." What this means is that Star Wars: Battlefront is fully optimized to make full use of the PlayStation 4's cutting-edge graphical as well as its multiplayer capabilities, as seen in another E3 trailer, this time revealing the Co-Op missions for the game.
The map used for E3 gameplay demo showed the Battle of Hoth, the ice planet seen in a legendary set piece in 1980's The Empire Strikes Back. The gameplay demo footage switches between the Rebel and Imperial viewpoints, including playtime inside the speeders used by Rebel forces as well as the iconic AT-AT Walkers of the Empire. Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker make appearances at the end of the video, which cuts away as the leaders of both factions clash with their lightsabers.
While DICE has said that the PlayStation 4 is the development platform of choice for Star Wars: Battlefront, gamers on other platforms will be accommodated as the game is confirmed to be slated for release on the Xbox One and PC. Battlefront supports up to 40 players in multiplayer, and comes with 12 multiplayer maps to choose from, including the planets of Tatooine, Endor and Hoth, as well as a first look at the planet Sullust.
Star Wars: Battlefront will arrive for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC platforms on November 17.
