Sony admits to being part of Shenmue 3 project after previous statements indicating game was a Kickstarter standalone

Sony is now saying that they are indeed going to be involved in the development process of Shenmue 3 after initially indicating the contrary.

When Sony first announced that Shenmue 3 was going to head into development, the news was met with an initial wave of excitement that was then followed with a bit of confusion.

It was excitement because the Shenmue franchise was finally being reborn, and confusion because the game was supposedly being funded through Kickstarter, thus making Sony's announcement seemingly out of place.

As it turns out, Sony announced Shenmue 3 in part because they are a part of the project as well, according to Games Radar. It's worth noting that Sony is not saying just how much money they are pouring into the project and how much of the Kickstarter fund they are using as well.

Sony now says they got involved with the project because the fans have made it known that they want Shenmue 3 to be a reality via their contributions on Kickstarter.

As for just how involved Sony figures to be in the development of the game, the Escapist Magazine reports the company may not be as hands-on as what many fans may be fearing.

It's likely that Sony's role in the project will be that of a glorified pitchman, seeing as how they have the international platform that can get the title some valuable name recognition.

More will likely be known as the Shenmue 3 project continues to move forward.

In other Shenmue related news, the game's creator Yu Suzuki has said reaching the $10 million mark will help make the 3rd installment of the franchise into the title he truly wants it to be.

Suzuki said having $10 million on hand will enable Shenmue 3 to become the open world game he always wanted it to be, according to Gamespot.

It'll be in the hands of the fans and perhaps Sony as well, to see if Shenmue 3 can become the game it was always meant to be.
