The Sandman Latest News: Joseph Gordon-Levitt reveals production, juicy plot details; Author Neil Gaiman wants no punching in the film

By

Since his announcement in 2013 that he's producing the film, Joseph Gordon-Levitt said that 'The Sandman' which is a movie adaptaion of Neil Gaiman's comics series, is still a go. Gaiman continues to be hands-on in the making of the movie and said that there should be no punching involved.

Gordon-Levitt said that the movie's pre-production is going slow but steady and admitted that adapting the comics into a film has been a challenge.

"It's a really complicated adaptation because those comics, they're brilliant, but they're not written as a whole. It's not like Watchmen, which is a graphic novel that has a beginning, middle, and end. Sandman was written over the course of whatever, I forget exactly, six or seven years. One at a time. One little 20-page issue at a time. And to try to take that and make it into something that's a feature film - a movie that has a beginning, middle, and end - is complicated." he said.

Well, The Sandman may involve crime fighting, but Gordon-Levitt said that it will not have punching in it following what Gaiman told him.

"Big spectacular action movies are generally about crime fighters fighting crime and blowing s- up. This has nothing to do with that. And it was actually one of the things that Neil Gaiman said to me", he said. Don't have any punching. Because he never does. If you read the comics, Morpheus doesn't punch anybody. That's not what he does. It's going to be like a grand spectacular action film, but that relies on none of those same old ordinary clichés. So that's why it's taking a lot of time to write, but it's going to be really good."

Many have previously tried to make an adaptation of the series but according to reports, this project is the one where Gaiman specifically gave his blessings to.

Writer David S. Goyer who will also be writing Sandman said that they have a draft for the film and it's moving forward.

"I hesitate to definitively say when it might go before the cameras, but the one thing different between other iterations and ours is that Neil Gaiman has been in the room with us and is a vital part of the team... We have a draft Warners is very happy with and we're moving forward, knock on wood," he said in one interview.

Gordon-Levitt is said to be producing the film and will be writing the screenplay with Goyer and Jack Thorne. It will be an adaptation by Neil Gaiman's "The Sandman" DC/Vertigo comic book series.
