Mirror's Edge Catalyst movement and motion; DICE and EA emphasize no-killing strategy

Mirror's Edge Catalyst is all about movement and motion. The action-adventure video game centered on Faith Connors and her awesome Parkour abilities have been given rave reviews post-E3 2015.

IGN raves about Mirror's Edge Catalyst gameplay post E3 2015 where they were treated to a short test run for the game. In the first Mirror's Edge, Faith was able to pick up a gun to defend herself. The new Mirror's Edge Catalyst completely denies players of this ability. The second installment to the Parkour-driven video game Mirror's Edge was first showcased at E3 2013, and have since been anticipated by fans of the game. The whole concept of DICE removing Faith's ability to pick up a gun centers on highlighting that movement is essential in the game. It veers away from a first person shooter perspective and instead emphasizes the use of movement to get out of sticky situations.

Polygon spoke with Mirror's Edge Senior Producer Sara Jansson to clarify the need to drop Faith's ability to hold a gun in an interview during this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo. According to Jansson, Faith will still be able to fight off her opponents, but empasizes that she will not be killing. The fighting becomes an extension of her movements, highlighting fluidity of motion that fits the game mechanics altogether.

"When Faith is in flow, when she stitches together move after move without failing and keeps her momentum going, she's actually invulnerable to bullets. That can keep her out of harm's way. It's only when she stops that she can get hurt."

Mirror's Edge have been critically acclaimed for its unique Parkour gameplay since its initial release for PS3 and Xbox 360 back in 2008. The realistic first person view gave the game an intense outlook as players control Faith Connors by jumping and climbing through the seemingly utopian environment of the City. What the first Mirror's Edge lacked in open-world environment, it made up for in the intensity of Faith's Parkour discipline throughout the game. This time around, Mirror's Edge Catalyst will have a more open world environment where players are able to explore more of the city, and explore more of Faith's abilities. By giving free reign for Faith to climb and explore the city, players can keep practicing for fluidity of motion without compromising the game's objectives.

Mirror's Edge Catalyst is scheduled to launch on February 23, 2016 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One gaming consoles.
