Google Commits Changes to Settle EU Probe - Source

Google Inc. has reportedly offered a final package of commitments that include some changes in its operations in a bid to settle a European Union antitrust investigation on alleged discrimination against its competitors, according to a source.

The operator of the world's largest Internet search engine submitted a package of remedies to EU regulators which include creating a more distinct search engine and offering links to rival search engine, the source said.

Google Inc. was asked to address complaints on how it operates, including allegations that it promotes its own specialist search services, copies its competitors' content, and has made agreements with websites and software developers that are disadvantageous to the advertising industry.

After Google's submission of commitments, the EU will conduct a market test and ask feedback from the complainants and other market players. An EU settlement can mean paying a fine of as much as 10 percent of the firm's annual revenue but without any decision on whether it broke antitrust rules.
