'The Last Starfighter' is getting a reboot not on the big screen but on television. The creator and writer Jonathan Betuel has revealed that he is currently teaming up with the virtual reality entertainment company Surreal.tv to once again push the boundaries on what's technically possible.
After 3 decades, 'The Last Starfighter' is coming back not on the big screens but on televisions as a TV show. 'The Starfighter Chronicles' aims to be the first TV series to embrace virtual reality, reports by Variety.
The creator and writer of the 1984 'The Last Starfighter' has revealed that he is currently working with the virtual reality company Surreal.tv to make this technological advancement come true.
Speculations reveal that the upcoming TV series with VR experience will have a new content, although it will still use the same technology and same energy. According to Comic Book, this project will take the Starfighters out of the war and see them acting as essentially space cops, lending itself somewhat more to serialization and the kind of open-ended storytelling on which TV thrives.
Betuel reveals that the 'The Last Starfighter' TV series reboot is more of a spin-off than the former because it will not directly continue the same story with the same charater.
"It's a very interesting blend," said Betuel. "The otherworldiness of it lends itself to VR."
Outer Places notes that the The Last Starfighter' TV series reboot with VR will be available to watch on normal televisions. However, viewers with VR headsets can benefit more on some several scenes every episode which are completely immersive. It is said that a headset will permit the viewer to be inside the scenes from the show alongside the characters, and explore the inside of a spaceship or get caught in the crossfire of an alien firefight.
While the project does not have a partner network, Beutel is also open to the possibility of working with streaming service provider for 'The Last Starfighter' TV series reboot with VR experience.
