After several delayed with regards to production and official release dates, 'Pacific Rim 2' is finally confirmed to begin filming in November of 2015. Director Guillermo del Toro admits that if the sequel is successful, could mean good news for his other project 'Hellboy 3'.
According to Yahoo! Movies, del Toro confirmed that the team will start shooting the sequel in November. He also dropped hints on what to expect for the film - specifically for the robots and evil kaiju. He said, "We have an epic battle at the end [that] we started designing a couple weeks ago." 'Pacific Rim 2' was reported to follow through with what happened years after the first movie's story and will focus more on the kaiju.
Previous reports stated that the Oscar-nominated film maker dropped the planned DC superhero team-up 'Justice League Dark' in favor of working on the sequel for 'Pacific Rim'. According to The Daily Beast, del Toro had to pick a priority due to scheduling conflicts. He said, "Warners liked the script, they were very enthusiastic and wanted to green-light it but they wanted it to coincide with the shoot of Pacific Rim 2... I was put in a very difficult place facing a difficult choice, and I chose to do Pacific Rim 2."
In the same report, he also stated that he was hopeful for a third movie in the 'Hellboy' series if 'Pacific Rim 2' becomes a hit. Speaking from a practical financial standpoint he said, "The hard fact is that the movie's going to need about $120 million and there's nobody knocking down our doors to give it to us... It would be great to complete the trilogy... But in a way I don't see the world-the industry-supporting that idea."
On account of the upcoming film's characters and potential plot line, del Toro hinted at the return of characters, according to Cinema Blend. Dr. Newton Geiszler and Dr. Hermann Gottlieb may be back but pilots Raleigh Becket and Mako Mori are still unconfirmed.
'Pacific Rim 2' is a follow-up to del Toro's science-fiction monster action film 'Pacific Rim' from last 2013 set to be released on August 4, 2017 and stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi and Charlie Day and received generally positive feedback from critics and audiences. The first film raked in $411 million in the box office against a $190 million budget according to Box Office Mojo.
