Chart-topping musician Ed Sheeran heads to middle ages as he joins creator Kurt Sutter's blood-soaked FX drama "The Bastard Executioner".

Red-headed singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran will soon be heading to the small screen as he has taken a recurring role in Kurt Sutter's upcoming "The Bastard Executioner", a medieval drama set amid the violent rebellions of 14th-century Wales.

The series, cooked up by Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter, calls itself a "blood-soaked medieval epic." The main cast includes True Blood Stephen Moyer, SOA's Katey Sagal and even Sutter himself. Starring newcomer Lee Jones as Wilkin Brattle, the plot will center on the life of a 14th century warrior who gives up fighting to become a traveling killer or a "journeyman executioner after receiving divine inspiration.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 24-year-old singer whose popularity on streaming services like Spotify is set to play Sir Cormac, an ambitious and deadly protégé of a high-ranking church elder.

Sheeran and Sutter previously connected during the final season of Sons of Anarchy whose creator is also Kurt Sutter. The singer song writer is a big fan of Sons of Anarchy and he recorded a cover version of Foy Vance's "Make It Rain" for the show.

Ed Sheeran gives the impression that he is fascinated with historical drama and fantasy. He has confessed to being a big fan of HBO's Game of Thrones and wrote a song called "I See Fire" for the soundtrack of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

This would not be the first time for Sheeran to act on television. He has made guest appearances on both Sesame Street and NBC sitcom Undateable. The singer also filmed a cameo appearance for the Australian soap opera, Home and Away, this year.

However, his appearance in The Bastard Executioner will be a little more substantial. This will be his biggest acting challenge to date. He will join a cast that includes well-known actors like Stephen Moyer (True Blood) and Katey Sagal (Sons of Anarchy). He'll be directed by another Sons of Anarchy vet, executive producer and director Paris Barclay.

When asked about the decision to film that particular guest spot, he said: "I'm at a stage in my career where I just want to do fun things ... I really don't care about being 'cool' or anything, I just want to do stuff because it's fun."
