Mel Gibson decides to direct a World War II drama after his last movie Apocalypo in over a decade. Joining the well- known director is Spiderman's Andrew Garfield and True Detective's Vince Vaughn.
Looks like Mel Gibson will make his directorial comeback with second World War drama entitled "Hacksaw Ridge". The drama movie is said to begin its shooting days in September in New South Wales. Actor Andrew Garfield is reported to be joining the director together with his co- star, Vince Vaughn. The Oscar- winning actor and director joined the NSW deputy premier and minister for arts, Troy Grant, as the director announced the production at a press conference in Sydney.
Grant enthusiastically welcomes back the director back and congratulates him for his comeback film in a post on Twitter, saying, "Welcome back Mel Gibson. New movie Hackson Ridge to be filmed in NSW bringing 720 jobs and $26 million."
The film tells the story of a war hero Desmond T. Doss, who will be portrayed by actor, Andrew Garfield. Doss is a private army who was drafted in 1942 but refused to kill and even carry a weapon during the war. He became a medic in the Pacific and was ostracized for his beliefs, but eventually became a hero upon saving 75 men helping them escape and putting himself in danger during the battle in Okinawa, Japan.
Vaughn, on the other hand, "will portray the role of Sgt. Howell, who is leading a battalion of soldiers in preparing for the battle", as reported by Deadline. While Howell tries to instill fear to his soldiers by pushing them farther to their limits physically and mentally in Hacksaw Ridge, little do they know the sergeant also cares for them.
Though Gibson's Hollywood directorial career had been shaky over the last few years, with an almost complete absence in the filming industry from 2006- 2010 and a few damaging public as well as private outbursts, he has still managed to appear in movies just like "Get the Gringo" and "The Expendables 3".
Now, after a long pause in his directorial career, many people ask if he still be able to pull off a quality movie just like his Apocalypo and many people also wants to know if his filmaking style drastically changed over the years. Film enthusiasts and Gibson supporters will soon find out when the movie starts filming this September.
