Spansion Inc, a manufacturer of flash memory systems for electronic gadgets, has agreed to purchase the microcontroller operations of Fujitsu Ltd for US$110 million. Included in the purchase are the employees, intellectual property and products of the Japanese chipmaking giant.

Spansion is also paying nearly US$65 million for inventory, it said through a stateemnt confirming the deal. It set the timetable for completion between July and September of this year.

Fujitsu remains as Japan's top provider of computer services to companies and has focused on information technology such as cloud computing to overcome current low chips sales for televisions and electronics. Included in the transfer would be the 1,000 employes included in the project.

The purchased unit are microcontrollers, a microchip that performs one action, such as air bags in cars. When placed in an array called Large Scale Integration, they become more functionals such as being able to process television images. The two electronic devices can be used from cars to many consumer electronics.
