'Prometheus 2' may not have a working title yet but filming has just been confirmed on January 2016. Several speculations point to it as part of an alien expanded universe.
According to Scified.com, it was confirmed that the sequel to the 2012 movie will begin shooting on January next year. The start date was revealed through a scanned issue of Total Film posted in a 'Prometheus' sequel forum.
Director Ridley Scott also said, "There are five or six big spectacles... I've got back into the sci-fi thing. I kind of adore it." Scott also directed the first film in the 'Alien' franchise and it is said he is working closely with 'Alien 5' director Neill Blomkamp as producer to prevent overlapping of the two films.
However, it has also been speculated that the 'Prometheus' sequel could be part of an Alien Expanded Universe with the two science-fiction movies purported to go head to head in production. In an article by Movie Pilot, there may be a possibility of a crossover between the two films as dedicated fans could be split into two different factions should things go in separate directions.
According to Movie News Guide, Sigourney Weaver - who plays Ellen Ripley in the Alien franchise - may also be cast in the 'Prometheus 2' film. Perhaps this is why the crossover theory came up. However, 'Prometheus' is set 86 years before the timeline of 'Alien'.
Unless there's some time travel involved, the two films probability of merging into one set universe may be improbable. Actors Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace are set to reprise their roles in the 'Prometheus' sequel. Plot details remain unavailable as of present.
'Prometheus 2' is the follow-up to the 2012 science fiction film of the same name. The previous film gained $403 million in the box office against a $120-130 million budget according to Box Office Mojo.
