Bill Murray has gotten the Ghostbusters call once again but he will NOT be reprising his original Ghostbusters character, Dr. Peter Venkman but as Martin Heiss.
Murray played Dr. Peter Venkman in the original "Ghostbusters" (1984) and again in "Ghostbusters II" (1989), but has long been resistant to the prospect of starring in a third film. He said last year that it is really hard to recreate something that was so beautiful and wonderful. Dr. Peter Venkman is one of three doctors of parapsychology on the Ghostbusters and the leader of the team. He holds PhDs in both parapsychology and psychology.
According to Birthmoviesdeath, the new character Martin Heiss is a professional supernatural debunker, a sort of an Amazing Randi type, who shows up and 'proves' the new Ghostbusters are fakes. It's a really tiny role, and it's sort of the mirror image of where we meet Peter Venkman at the start of Ghostbusters II. While it is possible Murray may not be playing this character, Heis is written for Bill Murray and it is specified in the script.
Murray is the second original Ghostbusters cast member to score a cameo appearance in the new film. Last month, it was revealed that Dan Aykroyd shot a scene alongside Kristen Wiig.
The all-female retooling of the 1984 blockbuster has already begun filming in Boston. It's also planning to set up shop in the old aircraft hangar and nearby runway left over from SouthField's previous life as the South Weymouth Naval Air Station. Like the original "Ghostbusters," the film is set in New York City. Filming could begin later this month and is expected to last about a month.
Directed by Paul Feig, the new Ghostbusters stars Melissa McCarthy as Abby Yates, Kristen Wiig as Erin Gilbert, Leslie Jones as Patty Tolan, and Kate McKinnon as Jillian Holtzmann. Wiig and McCarthy play a pair of unheralded authors who write a book positing that ghosts are real and they are in revenge from an emabarassment caused by it. The movie will hit theaters on July 15, 2016.
