Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions' sci-fi-horror sequel "The Purge 3" is set to film in Rhode Island in September. Slated for a July 2016 release, the franchise's third run will star Frank Grillo who will reprise his role as Sergeant.

Actor Grillo revealed that the filming location of "The Purge 3" will be in Rhode Island. He has declared it at the recent Television Critics Association summer press tour event for his show, "Kingdom." He has stated that he will be in the Ocean State for the shoot for six or seven weeks.

Other recent movies made in Rhode Island include the Maya Forbes drama "Infinitely Polar Bear" and Woody Allen's latest film, "Irrational Man."

Grillo will return to the franchise as the lead character named Sergeant along with the sequel's showrunner, Director James DeMonaco. Grillo was asked back before they had a script featuring his character. DeMonaco reportedly wrote the story revolving around Segeant's character after Grillo signed on the movie.

Grillo said: "They didn't have a script. They just called and said, 'Would you be interested if we had a great script?' DeMonaco called and said, 'If it's with you, I'll do it.' He and Universal came up with this, he's wonderful at this. He wrote a script. I didn't think it would be better but I think it's better than the second one."

Started small in 2013, "The Purge" and "The Purge: Anarchy" were low-budget films. However, despite their limited $12 million budget, the sequel itself earned a total of $200 million worldwide. The premise is that in the future, one day a year, all crime is legal, giving society a chance to purge their violent instincts and be good the other 364 days.

Production is mum about the script and the shooting begins next month. Michael Bay and Jason Blum are the producers, and Sharon Lomofsky is in charge of the production design. The rest of the cast has not been confirmed. The Purge 3 is set to open July 1, 2016
