USA has confirmed the 'Complications' season 2 cancellation, after 1st season or now series finale just a few days ago. Hot on the heels of this event however, USA is already looking into four pilots to solidify its drama lineup.
Deadline.com reports that it was not an easy decision. The network execs took into consideration USA's relationship with the series creator, Matt Nix, who is also the creator of one of the network's most successful series, Burn Notice. In the end though, they decided against a second season after USA failed to reach a financially sound deal with Fox 21 Studios which owns the series.
On its 10 episode run beginning in June, the series averaged a 0.35 in the 18-49 demographic with 1.44 million viewers according to TV Series Finale. Viewership further dropped after a lackluster premier and remained fairly disappointing for the entire season.
Entertainment Weekly reports that USA has four pilots in the pipeline as possible 'Complications' replacement. Reportedly, these are Shooter (based on the 2007 Mark Wahlberg movie), Paradise Pictures, Brooklyn Animal Control (a comic adaptation) and Falling Water. USA is keeping its focus on drama even after the network's experience with Complications.
'Complications' is about a doctor (played by Jason O'Mara) dealing with the aftermath of his daughter's death due to cancer. Now feeling tired and disillusioned, he was able to save the life of a 12 year old boy in a drive-by shooting and became an unexpected hero/vigilante. In making that choice, his morals were compromised and was often seen getting into trouble even with the best intentions. This puts all sorts of complications on his personal and professional lives. The show is criticized for its depiction of African-Americans and Latinos as gang members and it being too complicated to hook the audience.
Although 'Complications' developed a loyal following, the network decided it was not worth the efforts of producing a series with mediocre ratings. USA has decided to take a gamble on four new shows instead, hoping that the decision is with less, yes, complications.
