The development of the sequel movie was rumored to slow down as the Hansel and Gretel former director and screenwriter Tommy Wirkola decided not to grab the offer.
On an article published by Digital Spy, it stated that "a matter of time and priorities" made Wirkola step down but, he mentioned that his scripts will still be used.
It was reported on September 2014 that Wirkola turned down the offer just months after the release of the development of a sequel.
