The Whispers: With low ratings and cast contracts not renewed; Season 2 still possible?

By

The thriller drama series The Whispers had its season finale Monday last week but there are still no announcements by ABC regarding the show's renewal or cancellation.

Zap2it reports that the season finale ended with the unexpected twist of the aliens coming for the children. Henry (Kyle Harrison Breitkopf) was saved by Sean (Milo Ventimiglia) and Claire (Lily Rabe). Claire however ended up being in a mysterious beam which is believed to be coming from one of Drill's alien ship. Incidentally, the episode was titled "Game Over". Could this be a hint of things to come for the series?

Unfortunately, the signs for the series coming back for a second season are not good. The last two episodes of last season fell to a series low average of 2.52 million viewers according to a Bustle report. Even with these ratings however, the show has done well specially when compared to other summer breakout hits like Lifetime's UnREAL and USA's Mr. Robot. These cable network produced shows have been renewed for a second season.

Another issue the show is facing is that the contracts of many of its actors have expired last June 30 and have not been renewed by ABC. This leaves the future of the series in serious doubt as it gives the actors the option to sign on new roles in other shows. Deadline reports that Milo Ventimiglia is being eyed to play the lead of USA Network's "Shooter" pilot. ABC is hoping though, that most of the actors will be available if and when Season 2 happens.

EP Zack Estrin revealed that Season 2 will not require the whole cast in all its episodes with the show's creative team working out a way to have each cast member included in a few episodes only.

Even with these unfortunate events, fans are still hopeful that they will see Claire and the children brought back to Earth in Season 2.
