Since the release of the "Mulan" live-action movie, Disney was faced with the whitewashing issue. But then, the fans started collecting petition signatures fighting for the preservation and respect for the culture heritage of the story, an Asian star must play the lead role.
According to PopCrush, Disney has been under controversies when they released the decision that a white actress will be playing the role of Fa Mulan. It became disreputable leading the people to start a petition in attempt to make the Disney to pick an Asian actress instead. The whitewashing petition reached a total of 70,000 signatures.
Daily Mail reported that Ming-Na Wen, a Macau American actress who owned the voice behind the original "Mulan" animated film, does not seem to be suited to play the role of Fa Mulan.
In a statement on Mogul, an anonymous source has confirmed the rumor that the glee Asian star, Jenna Ushkowitz, will be portraying the main role in the film. After the petition, the studio immediately altered the supposed-to-be white actress cast in order to retain their credibility and reputation. According to the statement, only Jenna Ushkowitz attributes the required criteria for the role.
"Among the potential talent for Mulan, virtually none possesses the combination of star quality, relevant age, musical talent, and beauty Disney would need for its lead," the source stated.
"Mulan" is originally based on the legendary Chinese warrior Hua Mulan from the poem "The Ballad of Mulan". Mulan first appeared in the film in 1998, the sequel followed in 2004. In the film, Mulan is the only daughter of a senior war veteran who disguised as a man and drafted herself in the army in place of her father.
Meanwhile, Jenna Ushkowitz have not confirmed the news yet. The release date has not been announced but, the live action version could possibly be out on 2017 or perhaps, on 2018.
