The just released poignant trailer for the final season of Downton Abbey will likely bring its viewers to tears. The characters are seen saying their goodbyes not only to one another but they may as well be saying farewell to an era as well. The trailer at least hints of happy endings for the lead characters.
Set to a cover of "Time to Say Goodbye" playing in the background, Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) can be seen telling his ever loyal butler, Mr. Carson, "If I could stop history in its tracks, maybe I would. But I can't, Carson, for neither you nor I can hold back time." He then packs a suitcase and takes his name card from the door. This could mean that he may be moving out of the estate in the new season.
Lady Mary can also be seen tearfully reminiscing with Anna about their shared past. All the other well-loved characters of the series were also featured in the teaser such as Dowager, Lady Edith, Mr. Bates, Mrs. Patmore and Cora.
Season 6 takes place in 1925 before the stock market crash, specifically six months after the end of last season. If the trailer is anything to go by, this finale season is shaping up to be a tear-jerker.
According to Independent UK Lady Edith's series of bad lucks will run out in Season 6. Isobel Crawley will choose between Lord Merton or Richard Clarkson who she wants to end up with. Tom Branson will decide on whether to stay in Downton or move to America.
Matthew Goode is confirmed to have a part in the next season possibly as someone having a full-on romance with Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery), who deserves a happy love life in the end. She spent the past two seasons grieving and trying to move on after losing her husband Mathew in season three.
Christian Day reports that filming has already wrapped up with the cast and crew having already said their goodbyes. The series itself though will keep fans updated on their favorite characters and the endeavors they will go on to pursue.
Downton Abbey is ending not due to network cancellation but simply because the producers felt it was time it ended. EP Gareth Neame told Huffington Post, "We wanted to close the doors of 'Downton Abbey' when it felt right and natural for the storylines to come together and when the show was still being enjoyed so much by its fans". He added that there are no plans for spinoffs while admitting interest on a movie adaptation.
Downton Abbey season 6 premieres on September 20, 2015 in the UK and on January 3, 2016 in the US.
