After speculations of his involvement in the movies album, Sam Smith finally announced that he has written and recorded the theme song for Spectre. Entitled 'Writing's on the Wall', the song is set to be the title song of the upcoming James Bond film.
According to BBC News Smith felt relieved to be able to talk about recording the the song of 'Spectre'. He told Nick Grimshaw of BBC Radio 1 that this has been his own "top-secret mission".
The 23-year-old British singer-songwriter explained that it began when was called into the office and handed the script and was told to 'have a go at the song'. Smith added that 'Writing's on the Wall' was written in 20 minutes-the fastest he's ever penned a song. "I love the song so much," he gushes
Rumors of the Grammy award-winner singing the theme song started when he shared a photo of a ring on his finger that had "an octopus with blade-like tentacles." This is a familiar image-that of an invented terrorist group in the Bond story. Along with this, The Guardian reported that a week ago, Smith told BBC Radio 2's Jo Whiley he was "definitely not" working on the project.
According to CNN International, Smith had to keep mum of this news since January, which was when he recorded the track. He co-wrote the song with fellow Grammy award winner Jimmy Napes (co-wrote number 1 hits Stay With Me and La La La).
Sam Smith wrote in his Instagram account that this particular achievement is "one of the highlights of [his] career." An English artist himself, he is "excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy ."
Smith joins the list of incredible songs and artists that sang for the franchise, who are his "biggest musical inspirations". He is also the first British male solo artist since 1965 to record a James Bond theme song.
Sam Smith's "Writing's on the Wall" can be pre-ordered from midnight on September 7. Its official release is on September 25. This is the latest reveal of the highly anticipated James Bond film 'Spectre' before its premiere on October 26.
