Apple is expected to unveil the next-gen Apple TV on its big event in San Francisco on September 9. Rumors say that the revamped Apple TV which will cost $150 to $200 will make gaming more social and will come with Nintendo apps.

Started only as a hobby, the Apple TV has become a major area of interest for the tech company. It previously functioned as an audio and video streamer but has now evolved into a microconsole with games as its primary selling aspect. The new Apple Twitter account feed seems to point at this feature of Apple TV.

The company added various features to the device to make it suited for gaming according to Game Spot. Among these is an improved remote control with touchpad and motion sensors to act as game controller. The remote control connects to the Apple via Bluetooth just like the Nintendo Wii console.

The Apple TV will have an upgraded A8 processor to deliver high quality graphics. Its more powerful internal hardware is expected to support gaming. An App Store will be added for purchasing and downloading games and apps.

BGR reports that the Apple TV will make its entrance to the living room, hinting at Apple's plans to make gaming experience more social. Its main targets will be casual gamers who love playing games in their smartphones and tablets.

Jackdaw Research chief analyst Jan Dawson says this of the new device: "What the Apple TV has the potential to do is to bring casual gaming to the living room and make it a much more social activity." Though the Apple TV will not exactly replace hardcore consoles, it will likely create a new segment in the gaming industry.

There are unconfirmed rumors regarding Nintendo's involvement with regards to the upcoming Apple TV, as stated by Metro. Apple is rumored to have partnered with Nintendo to issue apps for the new device. This is based on Nintendo's previous announcement that it will soon launch apps intended for smartphones.

With the addition of the gaming function, the 2015 Apple TV is expected to bring much revenue to Apple by 2016 with its hardware and app sales. The new set-top box will launch today along with Apple's new iPhone 6s.
