After the very positive opening of Jake Gyllenhaal's Everest in Venice Film Festival, he stuns once more as the Demolition trailer is released. Talking about peanut M&Ms shortly after his wife died, the Demolition actor will open the Toronto International Film Festival.
Gyllenhaal stars as David Mitchell, in what started as a customer complaint over a defective vending machine. All is lighthearted, until Mitchell revealed that his wife died just 10 minutes, before his peanuts M&Ms got stuck in the vending machine.
According to The Daily Mail UK, the Toronto International Film Festival opener follows Mitchell and how he journeys through his loss-his is a case of "you don't realize what you have until it's gone." Hus meltdown starts as he expresses upset over the machine malfunction and leads to a series of emotional and increasingly personal missives, as if a dam has been breached.
The whole trailer points to the theme of destruction to be able to rebuild. Gyllenhaal's character feels the need to destroy and deconstruct his life-his house, his memories, his belongings-to be able to accept the loss of his wife.
Dubbed as a dramedy by The Wrap, Demolition unravels beautifully and somehow violently, especially as Karen, a troubled customer service representative played by Naomi Watts, comes across Jake Gyllenhaal's letters.
While only a glimpse of Watts is seen in the trailer, it will be interesting to see how her character partners up with Mitchell path of destruction-all of which under the watchful eye of his father-in law Phil (Oscar-winner Chris Cooper).
Jake Gyllenhaal's Demolition is yet another of his film that will open a film festival this year. Earlier, Everest is the Venice International Film Festival opener, which is a true-story disaster epic shoving us with snow, suspense, and spectacle. According to Wired, the teaser looks like "another praise-worthy performance" following Everest.
The article also takes note of Jean-Marc Vallée who has a track record of casting actors (well-established or not) and "pulled career-best performances out of them." Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto in Dallas Buyers Club in 2013 both got Oscars. Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern the following year with Wild didn't get Oscars, but were both fantastic.
It will come as no surprise if this movie is good in concept and execution. In fact, it is highly anticipated and expected that Jake Gyllenhaal and his co-stars will have a performance of a lifetime in this film.
Moviegoers are set to see Jake Gyllenhaal talking about his stuck peanut M&Ms and dead wife Thursday at the Toronto International Film Festival, making it the actor's second prestigious film fest opener this year. It will have its limited release on April 8, 2016, distributed by Fox Searchlight Pictures.
