As announced in August, that two installments of the Bad Boys are happening. Sony announced that Bad Boys 3 will be a reboot. Consequently, moviegoers expect major changes in the cast, story and production.
According to The Street, in a bid to get back on top of the business, Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) plan to "lean on rebooting franchises" which include Bad Boys, Underworld and Resident Evil, together with franchise starters.
SPE's Motion Picture Group chairman Tom Rothman 16-movie announcement meant that Sony is " following a typical model" which utilizes franchises as a way to lessen the "inherent risk and volatility of the film business." Bad Boys 3 is a part of their aggressive campaign to get back on track after a dismal year of hacking and lack of box office successes.
However, the sequel being named a reboot might mean major changes in its cast and production team. In a recent article, Venture Capital Post reported that Joe Carnahan will write and direct Bad Boys 3, replacing director Michael Bay, who directed the first 2 Bad Boys hits in 1995 and 2003.
In addition to that, Bad Boys movie star Will Smith was also uncertain in his return for Bad Boys 3. He played Mike Lowrey in what turned up to be one of his first box office hits.
Adding fuel to this, according to The Guardian, producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealed that Sony and Bad Boys star Will Smith were never on the same scheduling page.
The report adds that when Will Smith was available for a sequel, Sony had deemed it untimely for a Bad Boys 3 movie. Inversely, when Sony is read to make the movie, Smith would be unavailable due to other commitments. The latter is the case now, causing huge speculations that Will Smith might not really reprise his role.There is also a rumor that he might return in a producer capacity.
Whether he will produce or act or do both, what is definite is that he will be involved in the sequel. On the other hand, Smith's movie partner Martin Lawrence seems sure to be returning in Bad Boys 3. While he has not directly confirmed reprising his role, his interviews and statement seem to imply so.
Bad Boys 3 reboot is part of the major movie list announcement that Sony recently made. However, a reboot may mean a different cast, production team and even storyline. While this major change is being fueled by rumors of the movie's big star Will Smith not reprising his role, fans can only expect that the Bad Boys brand of action and comedy will remain definite at this point.
