As announced by Apple last Wednesday, the iPhone 6S features one of the most-advanced technology, the 3D Touch. This is a combination of hardware and software that tracks how much pressure is applied to the display and carries out different functions based on various levels of pressure.
The 3D Touch technology is set to change how the user interacts with their iPhone. Apple compares this new technology's Peek and Pop actions to the legacy Tap, Swipe, and Pinch Multi-Touch gestures. However, with its third dimension of functionality it brings about the "3D Touch" name.
The Taptic Engine feature is also included in the new iPhone 6S. This brings additional subtle taps, deepening the 3D Touch experience with a haptic feedback element.
Peek and Pop are the terms used by Apple to deep and deeper presses within iOS applications that show a preview or peek of content with a lighter press and pop into the full view with a firmer press.
Take the built-in Mail application for instance. The 3D Touch works to get a quick glimpse of an email through Peek and either lets the user to return to the list view or press harder to Pop into the full message. There are also certain instances when Peek view are actionable, which means the user can either swipe right or left to delete or mark an email as read.
Additionally, system-wide Quick Actions bring 3D Touch to a new level of convenience, making it easier for iPhone users to use the device with one hand. This also introduces a variety of scenarios, including the stock iOS actions of choosing a contact to call directly from the phone application's icon, choosing to launch the Camera application directly to the front-facing or another camera mode, opening Maps right into directions to the user's house, and launching straight into a specific conversation in Messages.
On the whole, the 3D Touch technology is available exclusively in Apple's iPhone 6S and 6S Plus. Preorders of the handsets will be available on September 12 and shipped on September 25.
