Although FOX has pulled the plug on Wayward Pines, there’s still a glimmer of hope for the hit summer series.
In an interview with Fox 5 NY, creator/ executive producer M. Night Shyamalan has confirmed the possibility of Pines getting a second season pickup.
“The show became the number one scripted show of the summer. It was a giant hit, and everyone started asking, are you going to do a second season? I've been talking with the author. I need to know the end. I'm working with the writers. If I can think of an end and work backwards, then I'll do it. In TV, I need to know there is an end point", Shyamalan said.
The final hour of the most-watched series found Ben waking up after being in a coma for three years. The protagonist, Ethan, was killed by the Abbies (short for aberration) to protect the rest of the town. Titled “Cycle”, the last 60-minutes also unraveled the secret that every resident of Wayward Pines was being monitored.
Fans who are eager to see more installments of "Wayward Pines" definitely shouldn't lose hope. It is not rare for a cancelled TV series to get resurrected by the same network or even by a streaming giant like Hulu or Netflix.
If a sophomore season does happen, you can at least expect for a satisfying run. Shyamalan recently told Deadline that if the series gets renewed, he and author Blake Crouch will not disappoint the fans by creating a mediocre second season.
“We both made a pact saying if we did decide to do something more here that we would approach it with a very high level of integrity and not let the opportunity dictate it because we're both happy to walk away... So I am happy to walk away, especially with such a wonderful reaction and all that stuff. But honestly, Blake and I do have an idea," he explained.
TV by the Numbers has reported that the July 23rd series finale of Wayward Pines performed strong with a 1.2 rating, under the 18-49 demographic. It is definitely possible that "Wayward Pines" is on its way to a second season.
