'Underworld 5' casts Bradly James; will focus on new set of characters; is this the last of Kate Beckinsale’s Selene?

"Underworld 5", the upcoming horror-action sequel, has added Bradly James (of Merlin and iZombie fame), to co-star alongside Kate Beckinsale and Theo James, as reported by Deadline. James will play the role of the main villain in the film, which begins production in Prague on October, but details of his role are scarce.

The 31-year-old English actor from Exeter, Devon, is set to be the nasty villain of the piece, pitting him against the vampire warrior Selene, played by Kate Beckinsale, who is caught struggling between a new generation of werewolves and vampires.

According to Hypable, Theo James of Divergent fame is ready to reprise his role as David from Underworld 4. And despite his character being not a major player, he's likely to take on a much bigger role in the fifth installment.

Den of Geek explained that the plan with this movie is not to reboot the series, but to be a tool in trying to attract fresh new fans to the franchise.

"Underworld 5", also called "Underworld: Next Generation" - is believed to be Beckinsale's last turn as the central character, since the franchise is said to shift focus onto new generation of vampires and werewolves who picked up the war where their relatives have left off.

Meanwhile, Screen Gems and Lakeshore are working on developing a TV show based on the movie's mythology. And it seems they're planning to build a cinematic universe.

In related news, A.V. Club reported the addition of Tobias Menzies to play a werewolf character. Anna Foerster is set to direct the new Underworld installment as well as the first woman to direct an Underworld film.

No word yet on whether Scott Speedman or India Eisley will return as of this writing.

Underworld 5, with a script written by Cory Goodman, is expected to premiere on October 21, 2016.
