Come September 23, the sophomore season of "Empire" will finally land on our small screens. The Futon Critic has shared that the season opener will make a three-month time jump from Lucious Lyon’s arrest. As the hip-hop mogul tries to operate from the inside, a new ambitious prosecutor that fans are yet to meet will make it her mission to bring him down.
On Cookie’s orbit, we find the fierce matriarch staging a #FreeLucious concert. But there’s a catch: it turns out that it’s all just a scheme she has plotted with Andre, Hakeem, Anika and Mimi Whiteman. Whiteman (played by Marissa Tomei), a business savvy woman, will join forces with Cookie & Co. to finally make the hostile takeover of Empire a success.

1. Cookie is getting a sexy love interest. As first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Taraji P. Henson’s iconic character will get some lovin’ in the second season. He will be played by Adam Rodriguez (The Night Shift).
2. Cookie’s older sister is coming to town. That's right, a new breed from Cookie’s clan will make an appearance. The Wrap has reported that Vivica Fox has been tapped to play the role. Curious about why she’ll pay her lil sis a visit? Turns out she’s gonna be needing a helping hand. No word yet if it’s about a family crisis.
3. Pitbull and Jamal will be performing a duet. The singer/rapper has booked a guest appearance as himself, TV Guide has learned. He and Jamal will sing “No Doubt About It” in one episode this fall.
4. Mariah Carey will guest star on the show. The real diva is headed to Cookie’s territory. According to The Associated Press, creator Lee Daniels said that the hit maker has nabbed a guest starring spot in season two. Although details on her role are still under wraps, we’re definitely excited for this one!
5. A spinoff about Cookie is in talks with the network. During the recent TCA press tour, creator Lee Daniels has shared via TV Guide that Empire is getting a spinoff that will center on Cookie Lyon’s character. “There is going to be a spin-off from Empire without question. I think there's so much ripe story [that] we've talked about it in the [writers] room already. About Cookie's family, what makes them her. Lucious' family, what makes them them. That in itself is fascinating to me,” Daniels said.
