When Sony released the latest and final update for Android Lollipop to Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Compact, and Z Ultra early this week, the smartphones are now surely bound for the much-awaited sweet treat Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
Sony Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Compact, and Z Ultra handsets are currently receiving the rollout for Android 5.1.1 Lollipop software version. This only means these devices are heading to the Marshmallow update. However, release date is not what certain for now.
As reported last August, Android 6.0 Marshmallow will be out in the Android community later this month. If not released by then, the update should come before the year 2015 ends.
Meanwhile, LG's flagship devices like G4, G3 and G2 were previously reported to be jumping straight to Marshmallow, skipping the final Lollipop update.
Android 6.0 Marshmallow should come via over-the-air (OTA) using Wi-Fi connection. It will come out with a laundry list of new features and improvements. If prompted for the update, make sure the battery is charged up to at least 50 percent, while storage should have an extra memory space depending on the new software's file size.
Marshmallow will feature improvements in emergency calls, fingerprint scanner support, USB Type-C support, RAM manager, network settings reset option, storage overhaul, custom Chrome tabs, and app links, among others.
Here's a quick rundown to Marshmallow features:
§ Emergency calls automatically appears with the nearest contact center and current location. The dialer performs some notable actions when dialing 911 or other registered emergency number. When dialed, the name of the number will appear on the screen, covered on a GPS map of your current location.
§ The new API level 23 introduces support to the fingerprint scanner for a better enrolment experience. It will also bring better error reporting, and enumeration support. The user-facing app permission controls and behaviors have been changed.
§ A rotatable home screen will now function in landscape format for apps and home screen.
§ The new app drawer removes the alphabetical divider and idle space at the end of some sections. This makes the drawer to more faster. A delete option to the screenshot has been added in the notification drawer.
§ Status bar icons can be personalized based on favorites or frequency of use. Those who are idle apps for quite some time users will have the option to remove them.
