Fans looking to get more 'Bad Boys' sequels; Will Smith unlikely to join the Third Badassery

There is not one but two sequels lined up for the "Bad Boys" franchise. Unfortunately for the fans though, it is not clear what Will Smith's role would be in the upcoming movies.

The Hollywood Reporter reported that Smith signed on to be an addition to the two sequels, but Sony has yet to confirm whether he will be on board as one of the stars or as a producer for "Bad Boy 3."

The 46-year-old West Philadelphia actor is known to play the role of Detective Mike Lowry in the two original films. His character is a hard-nosed detective, who always gets himself and his partner (Martin Lawrence) into trouble but result in over-the-top adventures.

The franchise nonetheless had lain dormant since the last film's release, which was in 2003.

In related news, Vine Report said that Michael Bay, who was the director of the first two films, will not be returning to helm the sequels.

It was later revealed by New Zealand Herald that Joe Carnahan (The Grey) is working on the screenplay for 'Bad Boys 3.'

The sequels 3 and 4 are part of a slate of films that Sony aims to release from 2016-2019. It reportedly includes a reboot of Robin William's "Jumanji" along with Milla Jovovich's "Resident Evil" series.

Reports say that it is possible that Smith will decide not to become a part in another Bad Boys film, since this can be linked to his consistent refusal to work on other sequels. An example would be is his decline to reprise the role of Captain Steven Hitler in Independence Day: Resurgence which is the sequel to 1995's Independence Day.

On the other hand, Smith's movie partner in the person of Martin Lawrence is likely to return for "Bad Boys 3." Although he has yet to confirm about reprising his role, rumors as well as statements seem to indicate so.

Sony is sticking with February 17, 2017 as the release date for "Bad Boys 3."
