Although the first film 'Ouija' might have not convinced fans to refrain from playing Ouija boards, there's no stopping Universal from releasing its sequel. In fact, filming is underway and reports say that actress Elizabeth Reaser has agreed to be part of 'Ouija 2,' a film based on the popular Hasbro game.
According to Deadline, Reaser will join director Mike Flanagan, who is reported to co-write the screenplay with Jeff Howard. Last year's micro-budgeted Halloween horror film had ended up grossing $102.5M worldwide.
It was in October 2014 when the first film was released. It follows a group of friends playing an Ouija board in hopes to try to contact a late friend who hanged herself. However, with their efforts to acquire answers, they unintentionally freed a dark spirit.
Comingsoon.net reported that despite the original movie's bad reviews, it went to become popular around the world. The second film is expected to once again focus on the infamous ancient spirit board that wreaked havoc in the first film.
International Business Times caught up with Robert Murch who is the foremost collector, historian and expert in Ouija boards to get the scoop on the real story behind it. He explained that people who play with Ouija boards are the reason for its power.
"Talking boards came out of the spiritualistic movement. They were intended to talk to the other side -- no doubt about it -- but Ouija has always been marketed as an amusement. It's marketed as a game, but there are people who believe it's not [a game], [that] it's letting the devil into people's lives. That's their belief," he dished.
The sequel will be produced by Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form of Platinum Dunes, Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions and Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis of Hasbro will be producing the said movie. Intrepid Pictures' Trevor Macy, director Flanagan's frequent collaborator, has joined the film in a producer capacity.
'Ouija 2' is expected to hit theaters on Oct. 21, 2016, just in time for Halloween next year.
