Showtime’s period drama, "Masters of Sex", will wrap-up another season next week. After kicking off the season with a huge time jump and unraveling some shocking developments for the characters, the Lizzy Caplan-starrer has evolved into one of this year’s buzzy cable television series. The latest season also introduced a slew of guest stars including Josh Charles (The Good Wife), Emily Kinney (The Walking Dead), and Judy Greer (Ant Man), among others.
As the third season comes to a close, viewers should expect to engulf themselves into a suspenseful hour. According to the finale’s description released by the Showtime, “Masters and Johnson find their life's work in jeopardy.” The cable network also unveiled the sneak peek images for the episode, allowing us to give a first look on the season capper. The highlights of the gallery include Libby visiting Ginny in her house, Bill and Virginia in a middle of a discussion and Dan Logan pictured in an airport setting.
Following the events that happened last week where we saw Ginny and Bill going through an awkward dinner with Dan Logan and his wife, it is palpable that things will not go smoothly between Bill and Ginny in the finale.
Vulture commented in a postmortem review that Michael Sheen’s character, Bill Masters, never strayed from being a controlling, manipulative character - a definitive reason why Caplan’s Virginia doesn’t find happiness with him. “Bill's full-bore psychopathy from last week's episode seems to have simmered down to a low boil of manipulation,” the publication wrote.
The site also pointed out the “weak” representation of Virginia Johnson in the show, giving a shoutout to the writers about the insufficient recognition of her legacy and contribution to sexual evolution. “How did time and professional success make her less of a force to be reckoned with? Why is she suddenly only ever spoken about and to, and rarely with? Why has her story been reduced to a choice between two men?” – the site added.
In spite of the gender disputes, series star Lizzy Caplan understands where the writers of the show are coming from. She previewed the dramatic changes ahead for Bill and Virginia in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “By the end of their relationship, they almost switch personalities. Virginia hardens so much and becomes so paranoid that she doesn’t have a proper education and people are going to find out, and Masters just gets older and softens in his old age”, the actress explained.
"Masters of Sex" will conclude its 12-episode third season with a suspenseful one-hour finale titled, “Full Ten Count”. The Sept. 27th installment will delve on Bill and Virginia’s predicament as they wrestle with the fact that their life’s work is at extreme jeopardy.
