The Big Bang Theory had shaken things up for fan favorite couple Sheldon and Amy on its ninth season premiere which aired last Monday on CBS. Picking things up after last May’s finale wherein we saw Amy asking Sheldon for time to re-evaluate their relationship, the hit comedy took viewers to a half-hour process of breaking up - a conflict which was served with a few punches of classic and funny Sheldon lines.
“You should think fast, because men can sire offspring their entire lives, but those eggs you’re totin’ around have a sell-by date,” Vulture quoted the eccentric scientist while arguing with his girlfriend on the premiere. The result, as expected, was a major fallout of their relationship. Amy Farah Fowler has called it quits with Sheldon Cooper.
In light of this, it’s now a lingering question of how Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik’s characters will move forward individually as season nine progress.
Next week, the aftermath of the split will be felt and it looks like viewers will find some going back into their old habits. As offered on the episode description released by The Futon Critic, “Sheldon films a special episode of "Fun with Flags" after his breakup with Amy”.
Although this comes as a curveball for the duo, shippers of "Shamy" should not lose hope. Series star Mayim Bialik weighed-in on this setback in an interview with TV Line, noting that this season is only an experimental period for them. “[The writers are] really experimenting with what this is bringing up for Sheldon and what it means for him, and how far he can be pushed emotionally,” the actress explained.
The Big Bang Theory season 9 opened with Amy finally ending her relationship with Sheldon Cooper. As the CBS smash moves forward, an experimental period will be explored between the duo. Sheldon will move on with an all new special episode of “Fun with Flags” next Monday. No word yet on how Amy is dealing with the breakup.
