'Equals' have been in cinemas for almost 3 weeks now. Co-stars Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult have been opening up to the media about their roles in the film. Both Stewart and Hoult agree that they drew over personal experiences and bonded over similarities in their past.
Together with director Drake Doremus, Stewart spoke with BuzzFeed, detailing some of the things she thought when she made 'Equals'. Stewart said that the process was talking to Hoult about their past, and being completely honest about things they talked about. Doremus added that they processed what is real and what is not, in order to "explore the human heart and the experience of falling in love."
On the other hand, The Daily Beast reported that Hoult's split with Jennifer Lawrence has been a factor to how he played his character in 'Equals'. In terms of having a highly publicized relationship and breakup, Stewart was on the same boat. With her split from boyfriend Robert Pattinson, Stewart shared the hardships of a recent (at the time of shooting 'Equals') breakup with Hoult, who was going through a similar time.
Stewar described the time as incredibly painful, but 'Equals' couldn't have come at a better time. Hoult agreed, saying it was "nice to feel so isolated from everything." The filming of Equal provided respite and silence from both Stewart's and Hoult's trying breakups. Stewart added they "felt akin by how much [they've] been through" and while it was frightening, they were able to use it to fuel their characters in the movie.
According to Vulture, 'Equals' have been "shades of Romeo and Juliet", "the myth of Orpheus", and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind." With 'Equals' a passion story of star crossed lovers, both Stewart and Hoult did not disappoint in delivering the intensity needed.
Hoult also said that 'Equals' may be a "commentary on America's prescription drug culture." Aside from being a love story, he believes the utopia/dystopia of the film is a question on youth's overmedication, especially in the States.
