Apple Updates Devices with Bluetooth 4.2 Secretly; Possibly Applied via Firmware Update

By

Apple has published some unannounced changes to some of its devices. This was after the introduction of the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPad Pro, and the iPad mini 4. In their official website, the Cupertino-based tech company has thrown in a Bluetooth version 4.2 update to the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, as well as to the iPad Air 2.

The new Bluetooth 4.2 promises up to 2.5x faster speeds and up to 10x greater data capacity over its predecessor. It also has stronger privacy, security, as well as power efficiency. Because of this new technology, Apple should be releasing a new Magic Mouse 2, Apple keyboard, and Magic Trackpad 2 that would have this new feature aside from the new lineup of devices that they have unveiled recently.

Despite the changes though, each of Apple's present product that has received Bluetooth 4.2 still has their original model number. Many were intrigued by this since electronics manufacturers would use identifiers on each variant of every model whenever there are new updates on them. Identifiers normally help consumers know what features a specific model has.

This could mean that Apple has either modified the Bluetooth stack in iOS 9 or has put in new chips without having to change the product designators. It is also possible that the changes were applied via firmware update, which could mean that those that are already on shelves may receive the update once they have been purchased and have been configured by their potential owners.

As for the sixth-generation iPod touch, iPad Air, iPad mini 2, and iPhone 5s, they may as well be stuck with the Bluetooth 4.0. Although these models may still have the possibility of getting the latest Bluetooth technology in the future using product-specific software patches.

More surprises is expected from Apple whether or not they are officially announced. For now, its latest iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPad Pro, and the iPad mini 4 are already on their way to the store shelves and will become available to consumers very soon.
