Former President Donald Trump has slammed US aid to Ukraine and proposed replacing the US income tax with higher tariffs during a visit to Capitol Hill on Thursday.
Donald Trump Suggests Cutting the US Income Tax
According to Reuters, representatives Thomas Massie and Marjorie Taylor Greene said that Donald Trump suggested cutting the US income tax and switching it with tariffs.
Despite their strained relationship, Trump reportedly shook hands with Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell and advised Greene to be friendly to House Speaker Mike Johnson despite her failed bid to oust him.
Trump declared strong unity within the Republican Party after his Senate meeting. However, there were reports that he privately called Milwaukee, the host city of the Republican presidential convention, "horrible," which stirred controversy as it possibly alienated voters in Wisconsin, a critical battleground state.
Donald Trump Suggests Reducing Taxes on Tip Earnings
However, a campaign spokesperson and some Republican lawmakers told Reuters that Donald Trump was referring to Milwaukee's issues with crime and alleged voter fraud, despite a nonpartisan audit finding no evidence of 2020 election irregularities in Wisconsin.
Trump also recently encouraged lawmakers to reduce taxes on tip earnings, a concept he previously suggested to appeal to service workers. The former president also condemned the $60 billion aid package for Ukraine, which received Republican support.
GOP Representative Don Bacon told reporters: "He's like, if Ukraine wins, what will be the benefit?" This was Trump's first visit to Capitol Hill since the January 6 riot three years ago.
