Demi Lovato has now become more open about her past life as she releases her new single, "Confident". Just recently, the singer opened up about her feelings towards her "abusive" father who died of cancer two years ago.
The 23-year-old pop singer recently revealed that she had an estranged relationship with her father, Patrick Lovato. Demi's dad passed away two years ago while battling cancer and it isn't until now that Demi fully opened up about how she felt about his death. According to Entertainment Tonight, Demi said that she was conflicted when her dad passed because he was abusive. He wanted to be a good person and a good father but he was still rather mean.
According to the singer, her dad's mental illness made him incapable of raising a family. Entertainment News Online reports how much it saddened the actress how her father's inability to be a father is beyond his control. His mental illness was severe as told by the singer, but still has a huge heart towards his family. She believed that however different or not ideal her relationship may be with her dad, he was still her father. After his death in 2013, Demi created the Lovato Treatment Scholarship Program in his honour. This program helps pay for treatment expenses for those who are struggling or battling their own mental health or addiction issues.
Demi previously admitted about her own mental health and struggle in addiction, entering rehab back in 2010. She has now slowly forgiven her father, offering a song for him in one of her tracks in her new album entitled "Father" as reported by Mirror. She stated how she wanted to write about her father's death and how his incapability of fatherhood was led by his mental health. The song contained lyrics saying "I know you were a troubled man, I know you never got the chance to be yourself."
Demi has now become more confident already about herself, hence her album title. She is now more open about the life she has lived and the past that led her to where she is now.
