Facebook Expands Notifications For Android Users; Includes Sports, Weather, Local News

Facebook is already large on any platform. However, they don't seem to be contented. The social network giant is now bringing expanded notifications to the Android operating system.

Android users will now be able to see notifications regarding local news, weather and even sports scores. Previously, only certain events and notifications are pushed through notifications.

Facebook's expanded notifications will make use of the Android phone user's location data. News from around the user's location will be aggregated for easier access. So, if there's a car crash or a robbery around the area, the user will be notified.

The community news isn't limited to certain categories. It could also alert the user of a concert nearby or store sales if the news picks it up.

Facebook will also send notifications about storm warnings, according to Tech2. Sometimes users can forget to check the weather updates and the push notifications can instantly remind them.

For instance, the user may be reminded that there could be heavy rains. The user may then remember to bring an umbrella or not to go out at all.

Another useful notification is movie updates. Facebook can provide the Android user push notifications on movies that are playing nearby, according to Phone Arena.

Users will also be updated regarding sports scores. If they are away and can't watch a basketball game, the app can send notifications containing updates on the current score.

Just like Google Now, Facebook's expanded notifications also provide the user the option to add more "cards." Android users will be able to customize which notifications can push through.

In addition, Facebook will also add "milestones," according to 9 to 5 Google. These are similar to what can already be found on the desktop and browser version.

Facebook is expanding their reach for Android users. The new notifications will surely increase their presence on Android smartphones.
