Google's Android Auto and Apple CarPlay have been confirmed to be available for future BMW vehicles. Will the move encourage other automakers to follow suit?
The move may concern some as integrating the third-party infotainment systems on cars means that they will have access to customer data. For the data to be controlled only by the carmakers, BMW, Audi and Daimler bought Nokia HERE.
However, BMW might have had a change of heart. The German automaker will be supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in their future cars.
BMW board chairman Harald Krüger have officially confirmed that both platforms would be integrated in the future models, according to Fortune. The announcement was made during the quarterly earnings report.
Krüger believes that autonomous driving and connectivity for the cars will play a key role in the future of the automotive industry. He added that digitalization will transform BMW's business model.
Smartphones have been a part of the everyday life of most people. Most often, car owners would like to use their phones with their cars too. Krüger said that BMW wants its customers to be able to use their smartphone's features in their vehicles.
Krüger said: "Obviously, it is not in the interest of our customers to give third-party providers access to their data. For us, the protection of our customers' data is top priority."
Apple CarPlay and Google Android integration with BMW cars have been rumored in September, according to BMW Blog. The announcement has confirmed the rumors.
With the partnership already in the bag, the "Project Titan" car from Apple may finally have some touches of the BMW maker. Rumors of the partnership for the autonomous car by the iPhone maker has been flying earlier this year.
However, nothing has been confirmed yet with regards to the rumored self-driving car. The BMW i3 electric vehicle is expected to be the building block, according to Learn Bonds.
Android Auto and Apple CarPlay will finally come to BMW cars in the future. Will other automakers across the globe also copy the move?
