Benicio del Toro was recently hailed for his outstanding performance in the film "Sicario". The Hollywood Film Awards bestowed the Best Supporting Actor award to Toro for his magnificent role as "Alejandro" in this R-rated crime thriller film.
"Sicario" is the Mexican word for hitman. It was directed by Dennis Villeneuve who has seamed the story into a poignant art in which viewers can visually experience the nightmare caused by the escalating war against drugs between the U.S. and Mexico. And in this movie, the 48-year-old actor has earned a lot of recognition for his enactment.
The film is actually about Toro's character, Alejandro, but the story did not focus on him as he was not the protagonist too. Yet in spite of that and the short amount of screen time he had, Toro managed to portray the depths of his role and acted out Alejandro perfectly.
Notably, the Puerto Rican actor truly studied his role and connected well with Alejandro which now got him his well-deserved praises.
"I felt he represented the pain and frustration of the people who have been hurt while fighting in this war. I was compelled by the character, who is quite mysterious, and how you find out more and more about him." Toro reportedly told The Guardian newspaper, as Xposé cited.
It was also revealed that Toro suggested to get rid of a long monologue that he was supposed to do to give light to Alejandro's story. The actor remarked that it is out-of-character to do so and was ultimately agreed upon by the director.
Now, the Hollywood Film Awards hailed Toro as Best Supporting Actor for his role in "Sicario". This event is the first awards ceremony of the year and it's marked as the prelude for the biggest awards seasons like the most awaited Oscars.
Presumably, the awardees of Hollywood Film Awards are also expectant to be the stars of Oscars, but things are not for certain and other contenders could still win the coveted trophy. We'll see if Toro earns himself another big award by then.
