Windows 10 will be coming to Xbox One on November 12. The Windows 10 update will offer Xbox 360 games support and possibly the voice assistant Cortana to Xbox One.
Microsoft announced that it will be releasing a Windows 10-based platform for the Xbox One on November 12. SuperSite for Windows reported that rolling out Windows 10 to the Xbox One is a significant step to Microsoft's goal of getting Windows 10 to one billion devices.
The Windows 10 update for Xbox One is referred to as the "New Xbox One Experience" (NXOE). It offers many goodies for Xbox users such as support for Xbox 360 games. Tech Insider reported that the NXOE will bring "backward compatibility" which means that users can play Xbox 360 games on their Xbox One consoles.
Users only need to load the 360 game to Xbox One and they will be asked to download a digital version of the game. They can then play the game on their Xbox One. This feature will set the Xbox One apart from the PlayStation 4 which does not support PlayStation 3 games.
Some Xbox 360 titles that will be supported on the Xbox One are Assassin's Creed 2, Mirror's Edge, Pac-Man Championship Edition DX+, and Mass Effect. However, new games such as Call of Duty: Black Ops II and Skyrim are not included. Microsoft said it will "work with game publishers to continue to release new titles regularly."
Another feature that could be included in the NXOE is Cortana integration. According to PCWorld, there are rumors that Microsoft will integrate its voice assistant Cortana to the Windows 10 update for Xbox One. However, Xbox Live programming director Larry Hryb said back in October that Cortana will not be included in the update.
Adding Cortana to the Xbox One could also suggest cross-platform integration with other devices running Windows 10. Microsoft continues to achieve its goal of creating a unified multi-device platform.
