Sony Playstation has released the latest firmware update, System Software 3.11, that promises to bring more general stability and increased performance once installed into the console.
The announcement was released by the company's European branch last Monday, November 9, says Tech Times. As declared by Sony, they are in the process of updating, upgrading and enhancing the gamer's user experience based on filtered feedback from its PS4 following. The update does not aim to add anything new to the console just yet, but rather to enhance and improve existing features and functions.
The end of this year's third quarter saw another 4 million Playstation 4 console shipments, adding to the company's number of 29.3 million shipments. According to Latin Post, this has brought Sony over $3 Billion in revenue to date, a 16 percent increase from last year's numbers.
Playstation Lifestyle does note that though the update adds nothing new to the console experience, the firmware enhancements clock in about 250 megabytes in required space. That is a lot of space for a simple tweak without any revamps.
One tool that caused a lot of distress to the console owners was the "Favourite Groups," and it was an example of PS4's former dysfunctional elements that could have been addressed in the new patch.
Software experts are however recommending all users to upgrade their software, as it still brings significant improvements to the console's stability and performance.
PS4's biggest rival, the Xbox One, has capitalised on backwards compatibility in order to increase console sales. The move also attempts to lure back old Xbox 360 users. Xbox One CEO, Phil Spencer, stated that Microsoft has its sights on satisfying their gamers and not on the hardware competition between companies.
All that to say, PS4 still remains as the top console in terms of units shipped. The holiday season is expected to rake in more sales for both competitors, especially with Black Friday fast approaching.
